The Upkeep/City & Guilds
Certificate in Diagnosing Defects and Ordering Repairs

Introduction:

Upkeep and the City and Guilds have launched a highly successful qualification for people working in repairs and maintenance.

The Certificate is designed to give people the skills they need to diagnose defects, take repairs requests and prepare repairs orders.

The Certificate is awarded by the City and Guilds. It provides a nationally-recognised qualification.

This is suitable for non-technical staff working in housing or property management. It is especially useful for people working in housing who take repairs requests from tenants, either in person or over the telephone. Many organisations which are setting up call centres to deal with repairs are giving their staff the opportunity to gain the Certificate. Increasingly people who deal with buildings and property in other fields are recognising the benefits of this Certificate.

Format:

The certificate has a modular structure, consisting of five one-day training courses, followed by formal written and practical assessment leading to a City and Guilds Certificate. Award of the Certificate will be dependent upon successful achievement in the assessment.

Course Dates:

We have designed this qualification to offer maximum flexibility. You can do the five units of training over a period of time which suits you and your organisation.

This means that small organisations with tight training budgets can send their staff as and when they have the funds. Larger organisations might want their staff to complete the Certificate within a month.

Upkeep delivers each of the one-day courses which make up the Certificate at regular intervals throughout the year. Check our course calendar for dates of the courses.

Prices:

The prices for each unit will be the same as our standard course prices. You can check these prices on our course calendar.

Five Units:

Each of these one-day courses forms one unit credit towards the full Certificate:

  1. Basic Building Construction

  2. Condensation, Damp and Decay

  3. Plumbing, Wastes and Drains

  4. Domestic Electrical and Heating Systems 1

  5. Repairs Reporting Skills

One Assessment

When you have completed the five modular units you can undertake the assessment. The assessment will consist of a two-hour written paper consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions, as well as a practical assignment in The Upkeep Exhibition.

One Certificate

After completing the five units and passing the assessment, candidates will be awarded the Certificate in Diagnosing Defects and Ordering Repairs by the City and Guilds.

Background:

Upkeep has been delivering training courses for people working in housing and property management for over 12 years. We started work on designing our Certificate for Repairs Staff in 2000. We became an accredited City and Guilds Centre in 2003.

The City and Guilds agreed that people who attended the modules making up the Certificate at the Upkeep Exhibition could gain credits for this learning. We piloted the Certificate with the Peabody Trust and since then over 400 candidates have successfully achieved the qualification, and it has become a benchmark for housing repairs staff.

Venue:

All the training will be delivered at Upkeep, using the Upkeep Exhibition.
